For minor illnesses and injuries not requiring a trip to the hospital, families in the Junction now have access to their own neighbourhood pediatrician. During office ‘walk–in’ hours, anyone is welcome to come to Roundhouse Pediatrics to see Dr. Saxena for an urgent pediatric assessment. During the summer, Dr. Saxena also hones his acute care clinical skills working for 2 weeks as the camp doctor for Camp Hurontario on the Georgian Bay.

After moving to Toronto Dr. Saxena spent his initial few years working in a variety of settings including the Parkdale Community Health Centre, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and North York General Hospital. In the early years of his time in Toronto, Dr. Saxena began working at the Rouge Valley Health System(RVHS) – Centenary Site, where he quickly became the medical consultant for the inpatient child and adolescent mental health unit. He also provided Adolescent Medicine consultations and counseling services for 12 years at RVHS.

In 2006 Dr. Saxena joined SickKids. From 2006 to 2010 he was the Staff Pediatrician for the Young Families Program, a program geared toward the health care needs of teen parents and their children. He also served as the staff pediatrician for the SickKids Inter-professional Team for Youth (SITY Clinic) during that time. Though he remains actively on staff at SickKids, in the Division of Adolescent Medicine, Dr. Saxena has expanded his office hours to be available 5 days a week at Roundhouse Pediatrics.

Since 2001 when he first came to Toronto, Dr. Saxena has also been associated with the Clairhurst Pediatrics team at St Clair and Bathurst. During the past 13 years he has been a part of one of the busiest community pediatric practices in the city. From pulling Spiderman’s hand out of the nose of a toddler, to helping teens make peace with their parents, Dr. Saxena has seen it all.

After spending the last decade in West Toronto, Dr. Saxena realized that there was a distinct need for pediatric and adolescent medicine services in the Junction area. With that in mind Roundhouse Pediatrics was conceived.

The story behind the name...

Sixteen years later, a roundhouse has returned to The Junction, in the form of Roundhouse Pediatrics, your centre for pediatric and adolescent medicine excellence.

Roundhouse Pediatrics logo

The name, Roundhouse Pediatrics, was chosen to reflect the services we provide and the community we serve. A roundhouse is a building used by railroads for servicing locomotives. Think of a roundhouse as a place where locomotives go to get treatments and get healthy. Think of Roundhouse Pediatrics as a place where your children can go to get healthy as well!

The Junction used to be known as West Toronto, and it was a major hub of railway activity two hundred years ago. The growing demand for railway service in the 1800’s meant that the small freight yard in the Parkdale neighbourhood was no longer adequate, and so the Canadian Pacific Railway acquired land and built a rail yard in West Toronto.

The West Toronto Yard was a small marshaling yard for Canadian Pacific Railway on the Galt Subdivision in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The yard was built in 1882 to relieve stress at the Parkdale Yard and was located near Keele Street and Dundas Street West in The Junction. It was once the main yards for Toronto, but was replaced in that role in April 1964 by the CPR Toronto Yard in Agincourt. The roundhouse was demolished in 1998.

Sixteen years later, a roundhouse has returned to The Junction, in the form of Roundhouse Pediatrics, your centre for pediatric and adolescent medicine excellence.
